My parents are from India, and we always took our shoes off too. I think in some parts of Europe, they have house slippers vs. outside shoes, as well. I also remember, from the Bible, that they would wash peoples' feet when entering a house! So this emphasis on cleanliness is widespread, but I think Japan is unique in that they really try to be perfect when it comes to cleanliness and neatness.
