Hopefully third time’s the charm
I was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004. I was only in my 30s. I was planning to start a family with my husband. And then I got inflammatory breast disease.
At the time, I only had a 15% chance of surviving for 18 months.
The doctor panicked. He tried to push me into cutting off both my breasts, the healthy one as well as the one that now looked like a grapefruit. He also wanted me to rush into chemo and radiation.
I refused to make such an important decision hastily.
For 6 months, I only did alternative treatments that I carefully researched. However, I tested my blood markers every month. For a while, they were very stable. Then the spiked, so I agreed to chemo and then radiation.
Radiation wasn’t so bad, but chemo was the worst experience of my life.
However, I survived, but my body and brain were no longer what they were. It took me years to get over the damage that had been done. Additionally, chemo and radiation can make your body more likely to have more tumors down the line.
