No Good American Solution For Sick Kids
It’s not like when I was a kid and Mom took care of me
When I was a kid and I got sick, I was able to stay home from school because my mother did not start working outside the house until my younger brother started high school. At that point, he could stay home alone if he needed to.
This was the best thing for me and also the best thing for my classmates.
If I was sick, I got lots of TLC. Grilled cheese sandwiches with lots of ketchup were my favorite treat when I wasn’t feeling well. I put ketchup on everything as a kid, including Mom’s home cooking.
Because I stayed home, I got the rest I needed when I didn’t feel well.
Not only was I cared for, but I avoided spreading germs to other children since I didn’t come in contact with them.
Were children healthier when I was a child? I don’t know, but I do know that, as an adult, I couldn’t understand why coworkers would come to the office when they were clearly not well. They were not productive and of course, everyone else would then get sick.
When I was an engineering manager, I asked my employees to please stay home if they were sick.
“Stay home and take care of yourself,” I told them. “That is why you have sick…
