One thing I did appreciate when I was in graduate school - my married friends from church would invite me to Thanksgiving dinners. But it's true that singles are often considered as less, even though that is not Biblical.
OTOH, I recently was diagnosed with cancer. I'm divorced, and I was amazed at how people from my church have supported me. During the first few weeks after my surgery they brought over meals and several people including my pastor visited me in the hospital. Since then, I know they are praying, my pastor and a few others have visited, and have helped by giving me rides to treatment or providing emotional support.
I remember reading that among the Puritans, a single person would be "adopted" by a family and included in things like family meals. I wish churches still offered that option for those who would want to participate.
