One use for chastity belts, however, might have been to prevent women being raped! Which would be much more likely for women in some areas without male protectors... because of the misogyny of some cultures, women alone were considered "fair game" and I could see a woman getting a chastity belt and locking it on herself (and keeping the key in a safe place, of course!) so that she could make sure she was left alone...
