people are a product of their time. It is in that context that I judge Gandhi to be a great person. Same with MLK Jr who also had human flaws and the founding fathers. On some level I think each of these even knew they were flawed. That level of self-awareness is not common unfortunately.

same with myself. I was never deliberately racist, but I WAS unaware. looking back, though... I'm glad society is a different place today. but in some ways we are worse off and the growing suicide rates among young people point to the new dark spaces we need to deal with.
