Last night, after we finished our substantial, vegetarian Thanksgiving meal, we drank gluhwein and played Fairy Tale Fluxx.

What are these things, you may wonder?

Gluhwein is an amazing, potent substance — it’s German hot spiced wine and it is ambrosial. I first had it at a German Christmas market here in Austin. While I have had, and enjoyed, other versions of mulled wine at parties over the years, gluhwein is better than any other variant, IMHO. Yesterday, about an hour before my guests arrived, I plugged in my slow cooker and brewed up about 2 quarts of the lovely stuff. Slow cookers are the best for making gluhwein since you can keep them on the warm setting and keep it at a lovely temperature without boiling off the alcohol.

Not only is it wonderfully tasty, it’s also a great way to get rid of old red wine. I am not a big drinker. I normally get a boxed wine, which says it gives me 32 servings at 5 ounces each, and that will last me several months, for both cooking and drinking. The problem is that the box says you’re really supposed to use it within 8 weeks. So what am I supposed to do with a half-full box that’s going on 3 months? This is where gluhwein is quite handy. Since you are mixing your wine with spices, you don’t…
