Winter Cats by Shefali O’Hara

While waiting in line at the library, I saw the girl in front of me had a physics text. “What’s your major?” I asked her. “I majored in engineering and physics was one of my favorite subjects.”

She seemed delighted to chat. She mentioned she had just moved into an apartment with a fellow junior and was thinking of getting a cat.

“Really? That’s great, there are lots of cats that need a good home.”

Then the conversation shifted to her career goals.

“I don’t know where I’ll end up,” she confessed. “I’ll probably have to move after I graduate.”

“Make sure you get the vet to prescribe some tranquilizers,” I said.

“What for?” she asked.

“For the drive,” I said. I just assumed that she’d take cat pet with her. Then I saw the hesitation on her face.

“Wouldn’t you take your cat?” I asked.

“I’m not sure. I mean, I’ll just be starting out, right?”

“Your parents could always temporarily care for her until you got settled.”

“Oh, no, my parents wouldn’t do that.”
