Praying For Others Helps Me

By lifting up those in need, I heal myself

20 years ago I first was diagnosed with inflammatory breast disease and given 6 months to live by my doctor. I’m obviously still here.

One thing I started to do after my diagnosis — I went for long walks every day in the fresh and and sunshine.

While I walked, I prayed.

On the path out, I prayed for others.

On the way back, I prayed for myself.

I am a person of faith, and I believe He wants me to love others as I love myself. That includes praying for them.

Three years and 4 months ago I was diagnosed with metastatic brain cancer.

Again I was given 6 months to live, this time by a surgeon who predicted I’d spend the last couple of months in hospice.

I looked up the statistics. The median overall survival was 6 months, while 1- and 2-year survival rates were 8.3% and 1.4%, respectively.

Yet I am still living at home. Mom and friends help me because I am weaker now and there are things I now have trouble doing. But I am not in hospice.

I am still alive. And I continue to pray.
