Is this a better way to train?

From Jazzercize to Spin Classes, Hot Yoga to Pilates, Cross Fit to HIIT, fitness trends seem to come and go. Some of them were super effective, some not so much.

One trend that seems to be popular these days is the push-pull workout for those trying to build muscle effectively.

What is a push-pull workout?

Instead of working out muscles in isolation, a push-pull workout targets groups of muscles. The focus of this training method is to differentiate between muscle groups that pull vs. those that push.

While this would seem to be a type of workout that would most appeal to bodybuilders, it actually has a much wider range of proponents among athletes. The reason — the workouts are designed to minimize the time needed for recovery between sessions and to create a well-balanced appearance.

How does it work?

Movement patterns are the key as is balance.

Let’s say that on Monday you focus on your upper body and perform a series of pushing movements. Let’s say that on Friday you would do your next upper body workout — for the second one, you use pulling movements.
