Jake Tapper called Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a quack on CNN. Along with Marianne Williamson, another person the media often treats disparagingly, he is the only Democrat running right now against Joe Biden.

Are Tapper’s comments about Kennedy Jr. fair?

Yes and no.

RFK Jr. has come out against the vaccination of children, but as he himself has stated in interviews, he is not opposed to vaccinations in general. He is opposed to those that are not carefully tested.

He has pointed to the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act. This removes liability for vaccine injuries from pharmaceutical companies while still compensating those who are injured. At the time, there were concerns that removing the liability from corporations can motivate them to take short cuts when it comes to testing, which seems to be the case.

Kennedy was part of a lawsuit against the use of mercury in vaccines.

The form of mercury used was ethylmercury. While the toxic effects of methylmercury are well known, according to the National Academy of Sciences there is no known link between the other form of mercury and disease. However, the report also stated that risks could not be ruled out.
