Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a Liberal Lion

Honor her memory before descending into politics

I was sad to hear that Ruth Bader Ginsburg died yesterday.

She was a liberal lion and a pioneer for women’s equality.

What makes me even more sad is that instead of taking a brief period to honor her memory and to allow her family to quietly grieve, politics immediately came to the fore.

The woman was not even cold when the clamoring started, from both the left and the right.

I could understand the right doing it, though I thought it uncouth and boorish. After all, Justice Ginsburg was not one of their icons. But when the left did it as well… Chuck Schumer immediately started to talk about the timing of her replacement. I wish that he’d first spent even a few minutes honoring the legacy of this remarkable woman.

She was born in Brooklyn in 1933. At that time it was rare for women to have a career. Justice Ginsburg not only earned a BA from Cornell, she tied for first in her class at Columbia Law School. She became a professor at Rutgers and then Columbia Law School, one of the few women to do so at the time.

Even her opponents admired her first class mind and sharp wit. Despite their differences, she was able to have a cordial relationship with…
