A couple of days ago, my boyfriend came over to help warm up my bedroom. No, not in that way, though it would make for a spicier story. He helped me locate an air leak from one of my windows which was turning my sleeping space into an icicle.

The quick fix? A folded up towel against the bottom crack. It seems to be working.

Normally I’m not too concerned about my heating costs in winter, since I live in Texas. Last year changed that. We had the Big Freeze. People actually froze. For those of us lucky enough to make it through unscathed, we are being more proactive this winter, as heating costs rise. Sure, we still have it easier than those in the Northeast. I can’t imagine what my heating bills would be like if I lived in Maine. Or Alaska, for that matter.

Still and all, here are some things I’m doing that will hopefully help my wallet this winter.

Sealing cracks

This can be as easy as sticking towels, blankets, or those cute felt snakes along the cracks at the bottoms of doors and windows. It can also involve caulking and weather stripping. If you are handy or enjoy playing with tools, caulking leaks can be a fun project that will likely save you some money.
