However, if you actually read the Federalist Papers, you'd realize there were MANY reasons for the electoral college.

Instead of relying on others to interpret source material for you, why not read the source material yourself and form your own opinion? You may end up agreeing with The Atlantic article... but you may not. Either way, you could point to excerpts from the original text to back your argument.
