For anyone who has been enchanted by the Irish countryside, Celtic myths and legends, and Gaelic music, The Song of the Sea will delight. It has an innocent charm as well as plenty of drama.

In the beginning of the movie, we have loving scenes of a mother, Bronagh, singing to her little boy, Ben. They live in a lighthouse with the boy’s father and Bronagh’s husband, Connor.

Bronagh is pregnant and gives birth to a daughter, Saoirse. We see Connor holding his new baby, grief stricken, with the mother nowhere in sight.

Ben blames his sister for the loss of his mother and is often mean to her. He’s bossy, often saying that he is in charge. It doesn’t help that Saoirse is mute.

When the little girl turns 6, the children’s grandmother comes and takes them away from their home to hers in Dublin. She does this meaning to be kind. She thinks the children will be better off and her granddaughter may learn to talk.

The children’s dog, Cu, attempts to follow them.

As the movie progresses, Ben’s attitude towards his sister changes. The two travel alone through the exquisitely portrayed Irish countryside. As they try to get back home, we learn more about Irish mythology, including the selkie, who are…
