Bluebonnets (the state flower) in Ennis, Texas — picture shot by Ken Hurst

Texas summers are dreadful — hot, humid, and parched. Texas autumns are nothing spectacular, particularly to someone who has lived in New England. Winters are mild. However, springtime is glorious.

First flower blooming in my garden — Iris shot by me

I have Irises blooming in my front garden as a harbinger of spring. Then come yellow flowers whose name I don’t know, but they bloom several times throughout the year as long as I keep them properly trimmed.

Meanwhile, after my Irises have died off, but before my roses are in full bloom, the highways, fields, and wild spaces are filled with wildflowers.

The Texas bluebonnet is the state flower and it lavishly blooms through the countryside in shades of blue and purple. I used to have a field behind my house where they would sometimes grow above my knees. At night I’d keep my window open and enjoy their sweet fragrance.
