I started doing art after I got cancer. A few months ago someone suggested I teach classes. I only teach a few hours a week. I don’t do it for the money, though of course that’s nice. I do it because it inspires me.

Above is a photo of the art supplies I used to teach my students their most recent art lesson. I taught them how to do flow art. I figured this would be something fun to do before the holidays.

Flow art involves freakishly large amounts of paint, so the students had to pay an additional materials fee. None of the parents seemed to mind. The children (and adult student) had a great time.

Of course, the fact that a blow torch was involved was part of the attraction. It’s amazing how excited children, especially boys, seem to get when you mention that you’re going to use a blowtorch. Another attraction about this particular lesson — the sheer level of messiness. There was literally paint everywhere when we were done. Again, this was a plus.

Below is a photo of one of the pieces I’ve created using flow art. As you can see, it’s abstract and colorful. I like to use metallic paint because I love the shimmer. My students seemed to concur. I offered them the options to use either silver or rose gold metallic paint, and a couple wanted to use both, and dollop them on to the…
