Thank you for writing. I am sympathetic with Americans and others who want a better life BUT it's a raw deal for Portuguese people (and those in other destinations for expats like Belize or Spain). The Portuguese government should step in and defend the local people.

Also foreigners should learn about local customs and try to fit in, not expect local people to cater to them. That is a selfish attitude, and also prevents learning about a rich culture which would be beneficial.
