just to expand, what about people who engage in risky sexual behaviors that get STDs, etc.? Or alcoholics who get liver disease?

I think the reality is that many behaviors can cause medical issues. This is sometimes reflected in private insurance rates - if you don't smoke and drink to excess, for example, and are at a healthy weight, you may pay lower insurance rates. Actuaries figure this stuff out.

The thing is - you are still free to do whatever you like. And I'm a big supporter of personal freedom. however, that comes with responsibility.

You are free to do whatever you like, but then you must pay for those decisions.
