I was an engineer and saw some of the same stuff when I went to grad school... basically you could get up to a certain level based on merit, beyond that, they wanted you to sell your soul. You wonder how some of the awful stuff happens - like tobacco companies denying that cigs cause cancer, and baby formula being sold to poor African women by American corporations leading to childhood malnutrition - and then you realize - after they sold their souls, anything is possible. If you don't do that, you don't earn as much money but you sleep better at night.
