One thing that you might want to try if you haven’t already — harem pants.

I know a company that makes them, here in the US, it’s called Deva Wear.

They use light weight cotton fabrics which breathe well. I took two pairs with me when I went to Europe. They are great travel pants since they don’t need to be ironed and dry fast if you need to wash them in the sink.

Anyway, there are other sources, I just mentioned the above because the pants are not filmy or transparent. For someone with larger calves, they provide plenty of loose material around your lower legs. There is an adjustable button closure at the bottom. They also look more upscale than jeans, even though they are more comfortable.

I wore these with Birkenstocks pretty much everywhere when I was traveling and was super comfy. :-)
