It’s not just people that can’t take the heat

The last of the veggies from my garden

Davy Crockett famously said when he left Tennessee, “You may all go to hell and I will go to Texas.”

The recent streak of severe heat here in Texas has lasted for several weeks. These are weeks where the daily high is over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In the Austin area, it has often reached temperatures of 105 or 106 during this time.

The hot weather has not been easy for people or pets, as I discuss in this article:

It’s also been hard on plants.

I noticed a few weeks ago that the plants in my community garden plot were all getting wilted. One valiant tomato plant gave me a final fruit, and my peppers produced several more but yesterday I finally had my last harvest. A few peppers and tiny garlic bulbs.

I still have a couple of kale plants in a shaded area in my backyard that are doing OK, so I chopped up a couple of the leaves along with my veggies to make an omelet. It was delicious, but I’m sad about the loss of my plants.
