OK, to be fair — I’ve got cancer. It’s metastatic lung and brain cancer. So even stoic men try to be kind to me. Some of them genuinely mean it, others probably just don’t want to look like jerks. I don’t care. Whatever the reason, I’ll take it. Though my friends really do mean it… they’re pretty wonderful.

So today I was having a mini-crisis.

I recently finished a course of radiation.

The reason for the radiation — my lung cancer grew enough that it was pressing against my vena cava. That’s sorta important to heart function.

Thanks to this issue, my right arm swelled up like a balloon and I had a hard time breathing, swallowing and so on. Surgery was not an option and the doctor was worried I’d bleed into my chest and die rapidly. So… radiation.

I completed my radiation therapy 2 weeks ago and spent a week resting. Felt great. I could breathe again without coughing! Yeah!

They did a blood test and turns out I’m anemic, so I’ve had 2 iron infusions since. That made me feel so much better that I booked a trip on Amtrak to enjoy fall foliage.

I’ve never done a train trip before.
