Beans from my garden

As part of my cancer therapy, I decided to grow vegetables. There was a method to my madness — I knew that if I planted something, it was symbolic of hope for the future. I would live to see the harvest.

Yesterday some of the harvest came in.

While my tomato plants have not done well and my squash and broccoli died young, my peppers and kale have provided welcome additions to several omelets and salads while basil has also done well. But the real winners?

My mint, which has been profuse, and, as of yesterday, my beans.

They were finally ready to harvest yesterday and I got a bumper crop.

Unfortunately bending to pick them up hurt my back so I kept having to take breaks. This is due to the physical weakness I struggle with these days thanks to the side effects of chemo as well as still having cancer.

However, when I was done, I had enough for several dishes. The image above shows only about a third of what my garden produced — each plant produced many pods. Last night my mother used some to make a traditional Indian dish. She marveled at how tender they were despite being large. I tasted one of the raw pieces and found it to be quite sweet.
