Chapter one of Midnight and the Shield of Mars
Note: This is the first chapter of my novel, “Midnight and the Shield of Mars”; I will publish a chapter twice a week, on Tuesday and Saturday.
En route to Gray Swallow Hall, one of the horses started to limp. Fortunately they were close to a town when it happened. Tyan climbed down from the carriage when it stopped at a posting house near the main square.
“Do you know how long we’ll be, Peter?” she asked her redheaded driver. The slender young man gave her a lopsided smile.
“It could be a while miss,” he said. “I’ll need to make arrangements for Maggie to be sent back to the Guild and find a matching horse. We can’t have an unmatched team.”
“Perish the thought.” Tyan waved her feathered fan. She hated the hideous thing, but it was the latest fashion. Silver baubles and tiny jewels festooned the handle. “Very well, while you take care of the horse, I’ll stretch my legs.”
Tyan tottered toward the local inn on her platform shoes. Who invented ladies’ fashions, she wondered, the Torturers’ Guild? Back at headquarters, she wore sensible attire, but now she was in disguise.
