Ultimately it’s about respect. You respect your dog and what it needs. Other people need to do the same. I alluded to this in my article about not forcing children to give hugs when I mentioned I wouldn’t force my cat to be petted if it didn’t want the contact. Same with dogs or any other sentient being.
