Watching Soccer On Telemundo

According to European friends living in the U.S., this is far better than ESPN

It’s World Cup time. While American sports fans get excited over the World Series (which, despite its name, is solely a North American event), The Super Bowl (the main event for what Americans call football), and the NBA Finals, for most of the world, there are other championships that reign supreme.

The Soccer World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in the world. Worldwide, it is followed by cricket (still a huge thing in former British colonies like India), tennis (I used to live close to Flushing Meadows and visited Wimbledon when I was in England), field hockey, and golf.

But The World Cup is the big deal. Many Americans really only know it’s going on thanks to the controversy of holding it in Qatar.

My understanding of this sport is pretty limited. I loved the Apple series Ted Lasso, and I’ve been told that Messi might be a bit like the fictional Roy Kent. He’s apparently phenomenal. I’ve also heard of soccer greats like Pele (I had a comic book about his life when I was a kid) and Diego Maradona.

Of course, I know about David Beckham, mostly because of the movie, Bend it Like Beckham, which brought Keira Knightley to fame.
