We Made Sure She Wasn’t Raped
Even though we didn’t like her
Years ago, when I was a freshman in college, I went to a frat party with three girls from my dorm. Three of us didn’t really like the fourth. Nevertheless, when she drank too much and the men started acting predatory toward her, we got her out of there.
There is safety in numbers.
We went to the party together because none of us was confident enough to go on our own. Again, safety in numbers. As freshmen, we needed emotional support.
Unfortunately one of us also used alcohol to help her feel confident.
The drinks were strong.
The first one in our group who took a sip made a face and warned the rest of us. But that one girl didn’t get the message and she kept drinking.
We noticed she was being escorted up the stairs by a couple of the frat guys so we intervened. We got her out of there before something happened that she’d regret the next day.
We were freshmen. I had never heard of date rape, and my friends were also naive, but we knew something was wrong so we took care of it. Later we learned, through the grapevine, about that fraternity’s bad reputation.
Why did the school administration tolerate it?
