We played D&D Under Lockdown

The challenges were many but the rewards were great

After several weeks of being socially isolated, I was jonesing for my gaming fix. It had gotten so bad I was seriously considering outfitting my cat in a rogue’s outfit. Cats are natural rogues after all. Seriously.

When our DM suggested we try D&D via a virtual meeting app, I was all for it. I set up my laptop at the kitchen table and laid out my dice and character sheet.

From the beginning there were challenges.

We were using Ring Central. Our DM, who set up the meeting, forgot to send the pass code. Then there was the wait for software to load… the usual first time hiccups occured with that as well. Sound and video quality for some of the lower bandwidth members of the party were not the greatest. And there were some issues with the game board.

Our DM used a drawing tool for our map. Each of our characters were represented by a colored circle. Since a mouse is a rather crude drawing tool, there were hilarious moments when she tried to represent what we were encountering. When she moved our characters, often they stretched instead of moving and she’d have to undo and redo several times to get things to work.
