What I found interesting, and this is congruent with my own experience — conservatives are actually more tolerant than liberals today, which is sad. A Trump rally can be open enough to hear Black Lives Matter, but liberal college students can’t allow Ann Coulter to be heard.

And it’s not just Coulter, who is uniquely awful — there are more reasonable people on the right who have not been able to speak in college settings for fear of their safety. Yet college is supposed to be a place for intellectual exploration. Certainly that was what college was for me as I read about and “tried on” different philosophies.

I’m a traditional liberal in the John Stuart Mills mode. Many so-called educated liberals don’t even know what that means. That is sad.

I find much of what Trump says hateful. When I’ve explained my POV to friends who are Trump supporters, they don’t attack me. They may not agree, but they understand where I am coming from, or at least try to.

OTOH, I’ve found that when I disagree with those on the left I have to tread very carefully. They seem less willing to hear a different POV.

This bothers me. It seems harder to find an honest intellectual on the left than the right, and it should not be that way.
