what needs to be remembered - making money in the arts, whether you are a musician, an artist, or a writer - is hard. Only the top 10-20% of these professions make enough money for at least a middle class lifestyle, though, of course, there are a few like J.K. Rowling or Stephen King who do quite well. But for most, it's a labor of love and they need a "real" job or a supportive partner to help cover bills.
Of course, this doesn't include those who find corporate jobs that allow them to do similar things, like doing graphic design or anime as part of a team, working as a designer or tester for sound equipment or being a technical writer for a firm or an editor for a publication.
