Why I’d Skip Prague

If I had to skip one of these cities

A few years ago, before COVID changed the world, I took a trip to Europe with a friend. We visited Budapest, Vienna, and Prague.

This was a fantastic trip and I’m so glad I went.

However, the city I was most looking forward to visiting, and which I ended up liking the least, was Prague.

Don’t get me wrong, it looks like a fairytale. But, in some ways it’s more like a Brother’s Grimm story than a Disney one.

Part of it is the people.

While Hungarians are friendly and the Viennese are gracious, the Czech were, by and large, gruff.

The people I encountered, for the most part, combined the charm of the Germans with the friendliness of the Russians. They smoke like Parisians as well.

In Budapest, if I asked for directions, even if the person didn’t speak English they would try to help me. In Vienna, people spoke excellent English and were patient if I needed help.

In Prague… not so much.

Many residents of Prague seemed to have a perpetual sneer.

To some degree, I get it. Prague has exploded in popularity in recent years and like any city that is inundated with tourists, the locals eventually get fed…
