Wonderful Ramadan Meal
Ramadan Mubarak!
Some people think Muslims are dour people. That they don’t laugh and enjoy life. They don’t know many Muslim people.
Yes, in my experience, Muslims can be serious. They take their religion seriously, but so do other religious people. This is part of having respect for God.
However, Muslims can also be gracious hosts, loyal friends, and a whole lot of fun. Don’t believe me? Ask a Muslim friend if you can join them for Ramadan sometime.
I went over to a Muslim friend’s house for a Ramadan meal recently. It was delightful.
The dinner was a little late for me, since Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. In the peak of summer, therefore, they fast longer than in mid-winter.
However, I was OK with waiting for my dinner since that increased my appetite for the feast. And feast it was. Even though it was a family dinner.
The first thing served were dates. This is the traditional item that breaks the evening fast. After we each had at least one date, then we were allowed to dig in and enjoy the rest of the food.
First the hostess served pakoras, which are a spicy deep fried fritter. She made some with cauliflower and some with onions. These were served with a tangy sauce and were quite tasty.
